Building Trust and Nurturing Relationships with Indigenous Community Partners

Partnering with Indigenous communities takes a nuanced approach and follows the lead of the communities. It is work that has been and continues to be rich in learning for the cancer care teams in Alberta and perhaps across the country. The context of historical dispossession, residential schools, Indian hospitals, past and current racism, and ongoing colonial structures creates challenges that require cultural humility and time to reconcile.

During this presentation, you will:

  • learn what is involved in developing partnerships with the Indigenous communities that will be served by the teams at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre,
  • learn about the process of engagement,
  • see some of the resulting efforts to enhance Indigenous people’s welcome and care experience.
