As a team, we will discuss Designing for Safety in an Urban Emergency Department, and the importance of broad consultation and engagement throughout the design process to create space that supports operational needs and workflows, and optimizes staff and patient safety. Working together, as administrators, architects, clinicians, engineers, planners, and security professionals, and in partnership with patients and families, we will share our experience as a multi-professional team designing clinical care spaces that align constructability elements, such as sightlines, means of egress, and selection of building materials, with the lived experience of those seeking care and working in the Emergency Department. We will discuss the use of strategies including mock-ups and simulation to evaluate intended design, workflow, and identify latent safety threats proactively.
