As a Director of HDR’s health practice, ranked the number 1 Healthcare firm for 12 years running by Modern Healthcare Magazine, Barbara, located in the Toronto office, is responsible for expanding and enhancing the firm’s reach throughout Canada and internationally, with an emphasis on diversity in the continuum of care. She promotes a strategic vision for the healthcare practice, including behavioral health, long-term, complex and elder-friendly acute care, where empowering environments are truly enjoyed by end users. Her career spans projects in Canada, the U.S. and Middle East. She orchestrated the Ministry of Health Long-Term Care Design Standards for Ontario as a living document upon which over 45,000 beds have been developed. She promotes the need to respect yet challenge research, best practice and emerging trends. Research and publications include work in design for autism, behavioral health, eldercare, and contribution to the most recent edition of Code Plus; Physical Design Components for an Elder Friendly Hospital. Barbara advocates socially responsible design in healthcare through an active speaking circuit worldwide.
