Unity Health Toronto had to fast-track plans to move into the new Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower at St. Michael’s Hospital as part of the response to the COVID pandemic. Challenged to accelerate the opening date by several months the hospital along with its design and construction partners worked together to leverage this new infrastructure in its fight against the pandemic. Operationalizing the new wing early in a compressed timeline was a significant endeavour that required the collaboration and cooperation of numerous teams at St. Michael’s Hospital. This presentation will highlight the flexible design decisions that led to being able to use new space for additional clinical capacity as well as highlight the collaboration that went in to condensing the move-in planning to a new patient care tower during the COVID 19 pandemic.
