Isolation Room Design
- Nick Stark, Vice President, H.H. Angus & Associates Limited Consulting Engineers
- Jessica Fullerton, Construction Lead – Infection Prevention and Control, The Ottawa Hospital
Isolation rooms are essential in healthcare settings to separate patients and residents as needed, protecting both occupants and staff. In acute care hospitals, these rooms range from standard private rooms to spaces with specialized engineering based on clinical needs and safety requirements. In response to COVID-19, hospitals, long-term care, and other healthcare facilities are increasing the number of isolation rooms and re-evaluating their design and engineering to enhance overall safety.

Enhancing the resilience of healthcare facilities to meet clinical needs in an energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable way is critical to future planning. British Columbia is a leader in integrating climate change resilience into healthcare design, and this session provides an overview of the newly released BC Guidelines for Healthcare Facilities, informed by global best practices and local projects such as St. Paul’s and Royal Columbian Hospital.
Following the session, participants will be able to describe key climate risks facing healthcare facilities, explain how the Resilience Guidelines inform planning, procurement, and implementation across the facility lifecycle, and identify ways design teams can integrate climate resilience into architectural and engineering components.
-
- Jonas Shultz, MSc EDAC. Human Factors Specialist, HQCA -and- Adjunct Lecturer, Anesthesia, University of Calgary
Learn about recently released, award winning strategy from the Health Quality Council of Alberta which make recommendations to optimize ROI when evaluating healthcare facility designs for quality and patient safety. Specifically, the guidelines describe how to choose between simple, detailed, and virtual reality mock-ups for a simulation-based mock-up evaluation. These guidelines can help decision makers determine the costs for projects that best meet their needs.
Aspects of these human factors guidelines will be included in a document being developed by the World Health Organization on Patient Safety.

Bjoern Bischoff, Managing Partner, wörner traxler richter, Germany
Michael Mertens, Consultant – Construction Project, Fankfurt Hoechst
When it comes to implementing the Passive House concept, a few special aspects of hospitals must be taken into consideration, including areas with sensitive hygiene requirements, elevated comfort requirements for recovering patients and the elderly, the wide range of various energy applications, and processes that give off great amounts of waste heat within the given area. Completed in June 2022, Bjorn and leader builder, Michael will share how the passive house hospital in Frankfurt design challenges were met in addition to operations and costs.Michael will discuss the structural condition of the existing building, the difficult thermal simulation for planning and the information required from the users, as well as the challenges for operation (complexity of the installations, training of the operating team, etc.). Rounded off with the expectations for comfort and energy costs for the operator.
