Anthony (Tony) Fields, CM, MD, FRCPC, FACP, DSc (Hon)

Dr. Tony Fields, Professor Emeritus, Department of Oncology, University of Alberta, is a medical oncologist and a member of the medical staff of Alberta Health Services.  He retired in 2011 from his most recent employment as Professor of Oncology, University of Alberta and Vice President, Cancer Care, Alberta Health Services.

Dr. Fields is Chair of the Health Quality Council of Alberta.  He is also Chair of the Provincial Advisory Council on Cancer of Alberta Health Services.  On the inter-provincial scene, he is completing his final term as Chair of the Expert Review Committee of the pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review, Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technology in Health.  He was previously involved at the governance level of several voluntary and professional organizations, including the former National Cancer Institute of Canada (board member, President), the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists (President) and the American College of Physicians (Governor, Alberta Region).

Dr. Fields was born and raised in Barbados.  He studied natural sciences at the University of Cambridge and medicine at the University of Alberta.  His post-graduate training in internal medicine and medical oncology was in the University of Toronto system.

Dr. Fields has been recognized for his work by several awards, including honorary degrees from Athabasca University and the University of Alberta, the Distinguished Alumni Award of the University of Alberta and the R.M. Taylor Medal and Award of the Canadian Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute of Canada.  In Alberta’s centennial year he was named one of Alberta’s 100 Physicians of the Century.  In 2012, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.
