“Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it.” “Dr. H. James Harrington

Billions of dollars are being spent on new healthcare facilities across Canada many of the planning and design considerations incorporate best practices, evidence-based design and technology innovations to improve care related to the physical design of the building. Once these projects are completed these attributes may go unmeasured therefore the impact of the designs and investments to achieve them are not fully understood. By measuring specific outcomes related to their design intentions a clearer picture is reflected to understand if it is worthwhile implementing these approaches in future projects. Moreover, results of assessments during the performance of buildings will help us continuously improve future projects and not “reinvent the wheel’ each time. These results can be shared and ultimately provide a standardized set of building performance requirements to the healthcare facility sector.
