Don Wood

Don Wood was a caregiver for his late wife Sherry, who battled Stage 4 metastatic colon cancer for 3 years, before losing her battle in early 2020. Don also lost his only brother Ken as a young adult who battled Leukemia briefly so he has lived his life with Cancer – face to face. Don started volunteering shortly after Sherry’s treatments began as a way to give back, sharing his experiences as a caregiver. Don is currently the Volunteer Co-Chair for the Strategic Cancer Network (SCN) Provincial Alberta Cancer Diagnosis Initiative (ACD) and a member of the Cancer SCN Core Committee for Alberta Health Services. He is also on the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) for the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the (PFAC) group for the University of Calgary (Cuthbert Lab and Oncology Outcomes). Don is also very active on a National and Provincial basis with 3CTN (Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Network) as the Chair of the Patient Representative Advisory Council. Don is very active with the Canadian Cancer Society (CIHR-PSC Reviewer) and a Steering Committee Member of the Community of Practice – Patient Engagement in Cancer Research as well as co-author for the Co-creation of a patient engagement strategy in cancer research 2023. Don is also a regular guest speaker and technical research reviewer for various health related organizations and was a BioCanRx 2022 Patient Scholar. In the private sector, Don is on the Technical Board of Advisors for the Calgary based Precision Oncology company Qualisure Diagnostics Inc.
