Benedict Zucchi

Benedict, a Principal and Head of Architecture at Building Design Partnership, studied architecture at the Universities of Cambridge and Harvard. A close reading of place and an abiding interest in user participation have been common threads in his projects, which range from mixed-use masterplans, schools and universities to designs for major hospitals.

Benedict has developed a particular reputation for the design of paediatric facilities, including Alder Hey in Liverpool, Great Ormond Street in London and the National Children’s Hospital in Dublin. Now nearing completion, the NCH is already being hailed as a paradigm shift in hospital design, where an urban approach is deployed to facilitate participation, humanise scale and enhance sense of place. The theory and history of this approach are explored in Benedict’s recent book, Big House Little City – architectural design through an urban lens (Routledge 2024).
