10:45 AM | Integrated Redevelopment & Infrastructure Framework – Lessons from Unity Health Toronto

As Canada’s healthcare system evolves toward integrated, patient-centered models, Unity Health Toronto has developed a system-level Multi-Campus Planning Framework to guide long-term redevelopment across its three hospitals: St. Joseph’s Health Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, and Providence Campus of Care. Spanning more than 3 million square feet and the full continuum of care, the Framework aligns clinical programming, site capacity, infrastructure renewal, and phased investment over a 20–30-year horizon. This presentation explores how distinct master plans were unified into a single roadmap for coordinated system-wide growth, with lessons from diverse urban contexts. The Unity Health model offers a replicable approach to high-performing healthcare redevelopment at scale.

1. Understand how clinical programming can serve as the foundation for capital planning across diverse hospital campuses, supporting more integrated, patient-centered care.
2. Learn strategies for unifying multiple pre-existing master plans into a coordinated, long-term redevelopment framework aligned with system-wide goals.
3. Identify approaches to planning and phasing redevelopment across varied urban hospital sites – balancing infrastructure renewal with ongoing operations and site-specific constraints.

9:15 AM | Small Home Performance Standards and Their Application Across Canada

As interest in the small home model of care grows across Canada, a key challenge remains: how to realize its core principles to their full potential and benefit within a highly regulated long-term care sector. This session examines the evolving landscape of LTC standards, including those in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and the new national CSA Z8004 standard, and how each framework influences innovation, design flexibility, and the feasibility of implementing small home designs. Through recent case studies, attendees will explore how design teams have successfully aligned small home ideals with both prescriptive and performance-based standards, as well as the obstacles they’ve faced along the way. The presentation highlights regional differences in policy and regulation, offering insights into how these variations impact market delivery and resident experience. The session concludes with a forward-looking discussion on emerging provincial standards and the shift toward performance-based approaches that emphasize outcomes over rigid prescriptions—opening new pathways for embedding small home principles into the future of LTC design across Canada.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify key differences between regulatory frameworks and evaluate how each framework influences the implementation of small home principles.
  • Apply lessons from case studies to identify effective strategies for aligning small home models with regulatory requirements.
  • Recognize emerging trends in long-term care regulation and identify opportunities for embedding small home principles and other innovative care concepts.

1:15 PM | From concept to reality: The post-occupancy evaluation of the Quebec City Integrated Cancer | Du concept à la réalité : l’évaluation post-occupation du Centre intégré de cancérologie de Québec.

In fall 2024, a post-occupancy evaluation (POE) was conducted at the Québec Integrated Cancer Center (CIC) as part of the Master’s program in Architecture at Université Laval. The process included review of the CIC’s clinical and functional programs, metric, syntactic, and functional analyses of the architectural plans, and guided visits of two other recently built CIC. Fieldwork involved extended on-site observations, a web-based staff survey, and an AI-assisted search for evidence on the impact of ambulatory cancer centers’ built environments on health and well-being. Key stakeholders from major hospital projects, combining clinical, organizational, and real estate expertise, monitored the evaluation. The presentation outlines the methodology used and the main findings

2:30 PM | From Data to Decisions: Simulation-Driven Digital Twins in Healthcare

When designing healthcare spaces—whether new facilities or expansions—digital twins offer an affordable and powerful tool to significantly de-risk decision-making.

These models add an intuitive operational layer to traditional 3D architectural drawings, integrating historical and forecasted data to simulate real-world performance.

By conducting analyses early in the design process, before final construction plans are locked in, organizations can achieve the greatest returns. Future reconfigurations of physical spaces are often costly and disruptive, while digital twin insights enable informed decisions that optimize workflow efficiency, patient experience, and resource utilization from the outset.

SimWell will present multiple past projects to demonstrate the benefits of this approach, showcasing how digital twins have supported data-driven planning and improved outcomes in healthcare facility design.

Notable projects:

  • CHUQ expansion: Human flow – simulation of elevators in the building
  • MUHC construction: Distribution of surgical services between hospitals
