Michael Keen is the Senior Director of Planning & Development at St. Michael’s Hospital. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering and received an Executive Master in Business Administration from Queen’s University. Michael has played an integral role in the development of St. Michael’s Hospital for over 20 years. During this time, Michael successfully completed three large redevelopment projects including the Cardinal Carter Stage B, the Cardinal Carter Addition, and most recently the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute – a 335,000 square foot research and education facility.
As the Senior Director, Michael is leading a redevelopment team through a 400,000 square foot project including a 17-storey Patient Care Tower and renovations of existing facilities, including the Emergency Department, to be completed in 2018. Michael is the past Chair for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Technical Committee 9.6 for Healthcare. He is currently the Chair of Canadian Standards Association’s (CSA) Technical Committee for Healthcare Facilities as well as the Chair of the new Standard for Health Care Facilities (CSA Z8000). Michael is the recipient of the John Jenkins Award 2012, an honor bestowed by CSA Group to the person who is judged to have rendered distinguished service in the development, advancement and application of voluntary standards.
