The incidence of patients presenting with medical and mental health comorbidities are increasing and represent a sizeable challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. With little research into the unique facility needs of these patients, healthcare organizations and staff need the design community to collaboratively create new (space, place, design, experience) tools to match the progressing practice of whole person care (or mind, body, brain care). Trainings that are both inclusive and responsive to the psychological and physical needs of patients are critical to effective treatment. Medical-Psychiatric Units (MPUs) or Complexity Intervention Units (CIUs) are the future of care. They are not medical units with psychiatric consultation, nor are they psychiatric units with medical consultation. MPUs provide simultaneous not sequential care for those suffering with comorbidities. Learning objectives:Understand the benefits of providing simultaneous vs sequential care, its efficiencies and effectiveness, Understand the benefits of providing simultaneous vs sequential care, its efficiencies and effectiveness, Explore how anticipated (and surprising) outcomes were met after opening the CIU, like reduced costs, increased safety and reduced lengths of stay, Identify specific elements that should be incorporated into the design to provide appropriate care and reduce patient/staff risk
